Police in Masaka on Monday seized counterfeit money amounting to UGX160m.
The fake notes, in denomination of twenty and fifty thousand shillings respectively, were seized from Umar Matovu, a fake money dealer.
Matovu 19, who masquerades as a taxi driver at Kumbu stage in Masaka Municipality was arrested when he attempted to buy a car from Yafesi Byaruhanga using the fake dime.
Byaruhanga became suspicious upon seeing the suspect opening one of the boxes containing fake money. He immediately alerted the area LC I Chairperson who in turn notified police that later arrested the suspect.
The Southern Region police spokesperson, Noah Sserunjogi confirmed the arrest and Sserunjogi says Matovu is now detained at Rakai police station.
He added that Matovu also faces separate charges of obtaining Shs 4.6m through false pretence.
Sserunjogi noted that if Bank of Uganda proves that the money is fake a second charge will be leveled against the suspect and before producing him in court.
