A plaque to remember former Libyan leader, Muammar Gadaffi’s support towards renovating Tooro Kingdom Palace, the Karuziika, has been removed under unclear circumstances.
The plaque which was fixed on the Palace wall has been there since 2001 until recently when it was removed.
Words inscribed on the plaque read ‘This Foundation Stone was laid by the Great Leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Libyan Arab People’s Jamahiriya H.E. Col. Muammar-Al-Gadaffi on 14th JULY 2001.”
Gadaffi, who ruled Libya for 42 years, was captured and killed on October 20th 2011 in Sirte, two moths after being toppled by the rebels of the National Transitional Council (NTC).
In 1996, Gadafi supported Tooro Kingdom with funds to renovate the King’s palace which had been in ruins for 30 years. In 2001, he attended King Oyo’s coronation anniversary in Fort Portal and laid the foundation stone at the palace.
When Uganda Radio Network contacted some kingdom officials on Thursday, they said they were not aware who removed the plaque.
In a telephone interview, Arthur Namara, the Kingdom Spokesperson said that he wasn’t aware the plaque had been removed. He said that whoever removed it wanted to destroy Gadaffi’s legacy.
Namara says that he will consult with the Kingdom Premier to find out who could have removed it.
Amos Mugisa, the acting kingdom Prime Minister told Uganda Radio Network that he doesn’t know who removed the plaque. Asked if it was right to remove it, Mugisa refused to comment.
Charles Muhanga, the care taker of the palace also refused to comment when asked.
