There is heavy police deployment at IPC offices on Plot 6 Katonga Road following the re-launch of the walk to work campaign.
A Uganda Radio Network reporter at the IPC offices says about 20 police officers can be seen around the area with a police pickup truck number UP 2964.
The Activists for Change national coordinator, Mathias Mpuuga, on Monday addressed a press conference at the IPC offices at which he announced the resumption of what he called “Walk to Work Reloaded.”
FDC leader, Dr Kiiza Besigye was said to be at the IPC offices during the press conference. The party women's league chairperson, Ingrid Turinawe was arrested on Monday morning while on her way to attend the same press conference. She is now being held at Kasangati Police Station. But Asuman Mugenyi, the police spokesperson said Turinawe was arrested for blocking traffic on the Kasangati-Gayaza Road.
According to Mpuuga, the Masaka Municipality MP, the new campaign kicks off on Thursday in Makindye West, in Kampala.
The MP says the campaign that was the cause of violence between police and protesters in April and May last year is being re-launched because of economic gloom in the country. He described the central bank rate, which was raised to 23% to counter inflation as a failed economic policy which has to be borne by the traders and consumers.
Mpuuga noted that the timing of the recent electricity tariff hikes and the scrapping of the government subsidies on the sector was wrong. The national power regulator, Electricity Regulatory Authority last week increased power tariffs by up to 45%. Mpuuga says the walk to work campaign is being launched under these hardships and it will be rolled out in other areas after the launch in Makindye on Thursday.
The walk to work campaign is being re-launched just a day after traders in Kampala ended their four-day strike to protest high interest rates on loans.
