FDC women’s league chairperson, Ingrid Turinawe is facing two charges of failure to comply with police directives and inconsiderate use of a motor vehicle.

Turinawe is still in Kasangati police custody following her arrest on Monday morning on her way to Kampala. Police say that she failed to adhere to police advice and sped off in a vehicle from her home in Gayaza, a Kampala suburb.

Police deputy spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba told URN in an interview on Monday that Police are still processing the file before it is sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Nabakooba says Turinawe will be taken to court as soon as the file is complete.

Nabakooba claims police have intelligence reports that Turinawe was set to start demonstrations with the help of different youths in various parts of Kampala.

According to the said reports, Turinawe’s agenda was aimed at disrupting the peace in Kampala city while pegging on the recent strike by traders. The traders in the city have been on a four-day sit-down strike to protest high interest rates on loans.

Other FDC officials have raised concern following the ill-treatment of their colleague. Alice Alaso, the party Secretary General says police have been advised against preventive arrest by the courts but have consistently continued to abrogate the law. She says the charges are trumped up and may be thrown out by court.

Turinawe is also facing a separate charge of treason before a different court. The state alleges that Turinawe, together with Sam Mugumya, Francis Mwijukye and others still at large, between August and October 2011 contrived to overthrow the government of Uganda. Prosecution further told court that the accused held meetings in Kampala, Mubende and Hoima among other places aimed at launching simultaneous riots until the government of Uganda is overthrown.
