Uganda People’s Congress party Members of Parliament say they have collected more than 274 signatures to have party president Olara Otunnu censured.
The members have since Friday last week been collecting signatures to censure Otunnu accusing him of incompetence.
According to Oyam North MP, Ayena Odongo, members of the National Council who are part of the UPC delegates have already signed.
But about 400 delegates are yet to sign before for Otunnu’s censure, who now has 21 days to resign or be censured.
Ayena says that the signatures were gathered during a party council meeting held last week.

Ayena says the censure motion is mainly spearheaded by UPC MPs, who claim that the party leader has failed to observe the basic values of the party.
The party believes that the core values surround the youth, women, peasants and the elite. To them, Otunnu has failed on all the fronts. The MPs blame Otunnu for failing to be a team player.
According to Ayena, the party erred by allowing someone like Otunnu, who had lived abroad for more than 30 years, to be their leader. They observe that he is out of touch with the realities of Uganda.

Benson Obua, the Moroto County MP also agrees with Ayena. He says Otunnu has lost the plot in his party leadership. Obua was very instrumental in making Otunnu the party president. He was the coordinator and chief campaigner of the party leader two years ago. Obua coordinated activities that saw the smooth return of Otunnu to Uganda.
Although the delegates’ conference is supposed to be called by the president, the MPs say there is room to call such a meeting by the members of the party having signed a petition. With such a petition in place, the president is compelled to call the conference.
UPC has been entangled in various conflicts ranging from the youth taking over the party offices, firing of top party officials to misuse of donor funds and now the eminent censure of the party president.
