Bunyoro Kingdom youth leaders are seeking parliamentary intervention in the governance of oil in the region.
Led by Gilbert Nyadru, the Chairperson youth Forum for Bunyoro, the youth are demanding a 10% share of oil royalties as a reward for the ownership of land and conservation of oil.
Reading the petition on Tuesday, Ayesigwa Julian, the youth leader in Masindi asked for the creation of a Bunyoro youth empowerment and students loan fund. The youth also want at least five percent of the oil royalties deposited in the youth fund. She said that while the oil sector has a great opportunity for Uganda, it also possesses risks of political and economic upheavals.
//Cue in: while the oil sector…..
Cue out:……African countries.//
The youth want government to remember the atrocities committed by the colonial government on Bunyoro kingdom.
Cue in: as the country prepares….
cue out:…..poverty.//
They want government to also disclose to the public the feasibility study that was done regarding the oil refinery and pipeline before the commencement of oil production.
According to Dozith Abeinomugisha, the acting principal geologist in the Ministry of Energy, Uganda will refine 20,000 barrels of oil per day to meet consumption locally.
The refinery that will be constructed in phases will cost about two billion shillings.
Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of parliament told the group that some of the matters were addressed during the Special Oil Debate in October last year. During the debate, parliament resolved to have oil laws brought to parliament for scrutiny. She said she is hopeful that when parliament resumes from recess in February government will get a chance to present.
Kadaga promised to hand over the petition to the committee on natural resources.
