Busoga Forest company management has accepted to cut down trees planted in the Lake Victoria Buffer zone in Fidrot and Kisumu villages in Mayuge district.
Approximately 30 hectares of pine and eucalyptus trees have been planted in Fidrot and Kisumu villages contrary to National Environment Management Authority – NEMA guidelines. According to NEMA, from the lake shore line, 200 metres of land has to be left without any human activity like planting of trees, food crops and rearing animals.
Isaac Kapalaga, the managing director Green Resources, a company that owns Busoga Forestry Reserve, says all the trees will be cut down to abide by the environmental laws

Thomas Aramu, the Mayuge district environment officer says human activity along the lake shores leads to lake silting and can also lead to expansion of wetlands reducing the lake shores gradually.
