Grade One Magistrates Court has set free four officials of Kumi district who were accused of stealing funds meant for the purchase of school furniture.

The four who were set free on Wednesday afternoon are former Chief Administrative Officer Rose Ochom, her Deputy Johnson Opolot, Stanley Omongot, the former Internal Auditor and Charles Okalebo, the principal accountant.

The four have been battling cases ranging from theft to abuse of office since 2007 when they were arrested for the loss of more than 44 million shillings meant for the purchase of school furniture.

But the Kumi Grade One Magistrate, Belmos Opio Ogwang, ruled that the evidence presented by prosecution did not warrant the accused to be convicted.

The magistrate noted in his ruling that court could not rely on the evidence provided by prosecution such as copies of payment vouchers which he said are not admissible in court.

During the trial, one of the accused Benyamin Ailak, the then Kumi District Education Officer pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
