Court
Nakawa Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu on Wednesday remanded Santos Komakech Makmot, the police constable who allegedly killed one person and injured five others in a botched eviction exercise in Port Bell, Luzira on Sunday.
Nakawa Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu on Wednesday remanded Santos Komakech Makmot, the police constable who allegedly killed one person and injured five others in a botched eviction exercise in Port Bell, Luzira on Sunday.

Komakech, a body guard to city director for physical planning, George Agaba, was not allowed to enter any plea, with the magistrate arguing that the lower court had no jurisdiction to handle a capital offence only tried by the High Court. He was remanded till February 8th when he will return to court.

Agaba, who was at the scene of the shooting supervising an exercise to demolish kiosks allegedly built in a road reserve, however, did not appear in court. State prosecutor Joseph Bayiga told court that investigations are ongoing.

Prosecution alleges that Komakech, on January 20th at Port Bell in Luzira, unlawfully shot dead a one John Onyango during an operation to demolish illegal kiosks.

Komakech appeared composed as a woman, who claimed to be his mother, kept whispering to him while in court.

Jane Kajuga, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, said the evidence obtained so far pins only one person but investigations are on going. She added that if the investigations warrant another person to appear in court, her office would do so.
