A4C Seeks Human Rights Commission Intervention

News
Activists for Change are calling on the Uganda Human Rights Commission to open up a desk for torture cases during demonstrations.
Activists for Change are calling on the Uganda Human Rights Commission to open up a desk for torture cases during demonstrations.

Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala says the commission needs to monitor and not get reports after a few months.

Ssempala says an officer should be assigned to track the offences on a daily basis arguing that condemning police actions after a few months leaves no room for concrete evidence to be used by the commission.

On Thursday after the Activists for Change rally in Kawempe, a number of activists and residents who were following FDC leader Dr Kiiza Besigye’s vehicle at around Kawempe Tuula and Kalerwe were beaten up by police officers.

Among them include Kavuma Robert who lost two front teeth, Kabula Nasoor who sustained a head injury, Ndyomuhangi Martin, Twinomugisha Happy and Abdumutwalib Kayondo who is nursing a torn mouth.

Another victim, Yusuf Matovu, is still lying unconscious at Case clinic.

The A4C coordinator Mathias Mpuuga also revealed that after the fracas he called the Kampala Metropolitan Commander, Andrew Felix Kaweesi to register their complaints.
However, he was shocked to hear Kaweesi allegedly say that they are yet to see more and the worst is yet to come.

Speaking to journalists at Central Police station on Friday, Kaweesi said rallies are to be allowed unlike processions.

He adds that police will use minimum force to disable anyone who shoots towards police including use of live bullets and teargas.

Mpuuga adds that they have finally been given a go ahead by State House to hold their rally at Kololo Airstrip. But the A4C members say they have put the Kololo rally on hold to first consult other activists on the way forward.

Cue out:…its okay we can use Kololo.”//

Next week, the activists have planned rallies on Tuesday at Railway grounds, Wednesday at Katwe, Thursday at Kyengera, Friday in Mukono and Saturday in Wakiso.

The activists are currently holding their fifth rally in Ndeeba at Kibawo zone.
