Violence Reported In Jinja East By-election

Five cases of election related violence have been reported in Jinja Municipality East constituency, where a parliamentary by election is slated for February 9th.

The cases include an expectant woman, Faridah Gwaivu, a Forum for Democratic Change supporter from Walukuba who was reportedly kicked in the stomach forcing her to have a miscarriage. Another victim, Swaibu Magumba, a National Resistance Movement supporter from Masese One village was attacked and his property worth Shs one million taken. The items stolen included two mattresses, a television set, a radio and a sub hoofer.

Fred Kaggwa, a supporter of Paul Mwiru was last week beaten and left unconscious in Walukuba East after he tried to stop supporters of Nathan Igeme Nabeta from hanging campaign posters on top of Mwiru’s posters. He is admitted at Jinja regional referral hospital.

Jonathan Musinguzi, the Jinja district police commander says most of the cases of violence have happened in the last one week, but campaigns have been generally calm.
He says the violence mostly occurs at night basing on the reported cases.

Flavia Mujulizi, Jinja district returning officer says the candidates should follow the campaign programs and also control their supporters.

Five candidates are contesting in the Jinja East parliamentary by elections. NRM ‘s Nathan Igeme Nabeeta, Paul Mwiru of Forum for Democratic Change, Ritchie Osinde of Uganda People’s Congress, Paul Waiswa Mufumbiro of the Democratic Party and Cranmer Dhikusooka, an Idependent candidate.
