Police Officer Throws Case Files into Toilet

Harriet Akello was on Tuesday produced before Kiboga court chief magistrate Byaruhanga Rwijjema and charged with abuse of office and attempt to kill the case per police act.
 A police constable attached to Bukwiri police station in Kyankwanzi district is in trouble for allegedly dumping four case files into a pit latrine, with intent to kill the cases.

Harriet Akello was on Tuesday produced before Kiboga court chief magistrate Byaruhanga Rwijjema and charged with abuse of office and attempt to kill the case per police act.

Prosecution told court that on 8th Jan 2012, Akello allegedly picked the files from the desk of the district police commander and dumped them into a pit latrine.

Donge Waningom, a criminal intelligence officer at Bukwiri central police station, told court that he forwarded the c ase files to the desk of the DPC for sanction to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Court heard that George Nkurunziza, the district CID chief ordered for a thorough search that led to the discovery of clues that the files were dumped into a pit latrine.

Some of the files contained statements related to murder, and the CID did not rule out the possibility that the police constable could have received a bribe in order to kill evidence contained In the files.

The police constable however denied the charges.

She was released on a non-cash bail and will re-appear in court on February 28th for the hearing of the case.
