Police in Kabale district is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of the acting district veterinary officer.
Dr Gerverse Bataringaya collapsed and died on Wednesday morning at his home in Rwakaraba, Northern Division in Kabale Municipality.
According to the Kabale district police commander, Bosco Arop, Bataringaya’s body has been transported to Mbarara regional referral hospital for a postmortem.
Relatives of the deceased say the doctor collapsed while coming from the bathroom. The relatives who did not want to be name said that he was seen with his wife at a drinking joint towards midnight on Tuesday before heading home.
Bataringaya, formerly an assistant veterinary officer for Rukiga County, became the acting district veterinary officer after the retirement Dr Bahunde Kabakiriraho last year.
He became popular after slapping a ban on the sale and consumption of pork in the district following an out break of African swine fever which claimed over 1000 pigs.
At the time of his death, Bataringaya was finalizing a report to the ministry of agriculture concerning the state of African swine fever in the district.
