Ten family members have been left stranded after fire destroyed their seven houses in Lajopi ginnery village in Adjumani district.
According to an eye witness, the fire started from a kitchen as a woman was baking bread. The fire spread to the rest of the huts due to strong winds.
More than 10 family members lost the vital shelter, house hold property, essential documents, food items and millions of shillings were destroyed in the fire.
Natalin Akum, one of the victims lost 700,000 shillings meant for school fees of her children. She also lost five sacks of maize grains, a mobile phone and one sack of cow peas.
She says after loosing all her belongings, she has nowhere to go and doesn’t know whether her children will report to school this term.
Attempts by some residents to put out the fire using sand and water proved futile as strong wind overpowered their efforts. The sitiuation was aggravated by the lack of a fire brigade.
The District Police Commander, Fredrick Segirinya, says assisting emergency cases is difficult because they don’t have fire brigade. They have to request for fire brigade either from Gulu or Arua.
