Police at Oyam Central station are holding seven primary school head teachers over corruption and abuse of office allegations.

Patrick Tusiime, Oyam District chief police detective says the arrest followed a resolution passed by the district security committee last week.

Tusiime says they have been receiving several complaints on how some school head teachers and civil servants were abusing UPE funds, inflating numbers of both teachers and pupils to get more money from the government.

He however declined to divulge the particulars of the arrested head teachers. He identified the affected schools as Minakulu, Opuk, Ajaga, Congo, Bario and Wanglobo primary schools.

He added that the head teachers of Abok and Acokara schools were not arrested since they took off upon seeing police.

Tusiime says that one of the schools with total enrollment of 700 pupils had submitted 1200 names to the ministry.

Police say some of those head teachers had not accounted for UPE funds for the past one year. At Acokara primary school, the head teacher identified as Engola Rose pretended like she was going behind his office and disappeared.

Col. Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo, the district chairman said he is happy with the arrests, describing the suspects as saboteurs.

Okello said some of those head teachers were being used by corrupt civil servants at the district to mismanage public funds.
