Kampala High Court has ordered the national power distribution company, Umeme to respond to claims by a husband who claims he lost his wife due to its negligence.
Musa Kironde, a resident of Nakayiza Zone Kabowa in Kampala, wants Umeme to pay him over 138 million shillings as damages for the loss of his 32 year old wife, Aminah Nansubuga in September last year.
The money also includes burial expenses, transportation of the body and treatment of his son.
Kironde narrates that on day his wife died, she was going about her domestic duties at home when a high voltage electric cable suddenly fell on their house and electrocuted her thereby dying of shock. He adds that his one year old son, Musa Lukumani sustained severe injuries.
Kironde, now a single father of eight, told court that he is a sickly man and that his wife was the sole bread winner of the home who had to live an expectant life of more 25 years.
He contends that Umeme is liable for his wife’s death because it failed to carry out routine check ups to find out the status of the cables.
High Court deputy registrar, John Keitirima gave Umeme 15 days to file its defence.
