Mayuge’s best Ordinary Level student is stranded with no fees to further his education.
17 year old David Bakaaki, who sat his 2011 Uganda Certificate of Education examinations at Hillside Secondary School in Lugolole, Mayuge district obtained 14 aggregates in 8 subjects becoming the best in the district.
Bakaaki, who is now into brick laying business, says he cannot afford paying school fees on his own as he has no stable source of income, yet his single parent has poor health and cannot pay school fees.

Bakaaki is the fourth child in a family of nine children all catered for by a single mother, Christine Tikabula, who resides in Igunda village in Mayuge district. Tikabula is a subsistence farmer on half an acre piece of land in Igunda village. She says the surplus from the garden is not enough to get money to educate Bakaaki and meet other family needs.
She says her son has in the last four years studied on a partial scholarship at Hillside School, which only admits students at ordinary level.
Moses Mukisa, headmaster Hillside Secondary School says the school would have given him another scholarship if it had an Advanced Level section.

Steven Kyakwise, Mayuge district education officer says the district does not have scholarships for ordinary level students who excel to go to high school.
The seven government scholarships available are only for students being admitted in the university.
