Tanga Odoi, chairman Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA is in trouble over a letter he wrote to the prime minister equating some members of the university council to Vuvuzelas, who shout other staff members into silence. The vuvuzela is a plastic horn about 65 centimeters (2 ft) long, which produces a loud monotone note.
In January 2012, Tanga Odoi wrote to Amama Mbabazi, the prime minister accusing some of the officials of the University council of incompetence. However, his letter has not gone down well with members of the University council. The council has resolved to drag Odoi before the university appointments committee for disciplinary action.
David Kahundha Muhwezi, Makerere University secretary says that Odoi has been behaving in a disrespectful manner to the University Council on several occasions. In addition, Kahundha claims that they have also been receiving complaints from several people to prevail over Odoi because of misconduct. Odoi will not have any of this.
He admits writing to Mbabazi on various issues ranging from the size of the university, presence of many young people in the university top management, corruption, weaknesses in the council and wrong representation amongst others.
He threatens to drag the university council to court once they insist on dragging him before the appointments board for disciplinary action saying it is a violation of his rights. According to Odoi, he was never been issued with a code on the type of language to use when he was joining the university in 1993.
// Cue in: “I have my appointment letter …
Cue out: …very flagellant.” //
Odoi says that he is already in consulting with his lawyers to take legal action against the council decision.
// Cue in: “Council is writing …
Cue out: … the way forward.” //
Eng. Dr. Charles Wana Etyem, chairman Makerere university council says the appointment board committee will set the date for meeting Odoi.
