Mayuge district education office is to close newly opened unlicensed schools in the district.
More than ten primary and secondary schools opened in Mayuge district without getting clearance from the education office and are operating without the basic minimum educational requirements for students and teachers.
They have no registered plots of land in the names of the school, qualified teachers, text books and classroom blocks.
Steven Kyakwise, the Mayuge district Education officer says the schools open and recruit students but end up closing prematurely which affects the student’s studies.

He says unlicensed schools have compromised Mayuge’s education performance in the last two years and this calls for their closure before it’s too late.
One of the affected schools is New Hope Secondary School located at Musita, which opened this year with both Ordinary and Advanced levels. It has no land title, library and lacks enough teachers.
Isma Ngobi, the Head teacher says the school has just begun and it should be given time to acquire the basic school necessities required by the ministry of education.

The education department wrote letters of closure of the schools, to all local council one chairpersons in Mayuge district. The letters request the LC officials to report all schools opening up without clearance and also warn parents not to take their students to unregistered schools.
Mohammed Nkuutu, the LC 1 Musita A village in which New Hope Secondary School is located welcomes the move and has begun advising parents not to take their children to study there.
