Five People have died and three others severely injured in a motor accident on the Hoima-Kagadi road in Kibaale district.

The accident occurred at about 9:00pm on Sunday at Kiranzi, 14 kilometers from Kagadi town.

John Ojukuna Elatu, the Kibaale district police commander says the accident occurred when a Fuso Lorry Registration Number UAE 409W rammed into a special hire taxi which was offloading passengers.

At the time of filing this report, Ojukuna did not have the registration number of the special hire taxi.

The lorry loaded with over 600 jerry cans of local brew—Waragi—was heading to Gulu from Muhorro in Kibaale district.

Ojukuna identifies the dead as Michael Okello, Charles Otema, Raly Opio, and one Oyet, all businessmen from Gulu and Paul Kyakabale, the driver of the special hire taxi.

Two of the victims died on the spot while the other three died on arrival at Kagadi hospital. Seven passengers were aboard the Fuso lorry.

Ojukuna says the passengers boarded another vehicle to Gulu and are now admitted at Lacor Hospital.

The district police commander has blamed the accident on over speeding and the poor mechanical condition of the truck.

At Kiranzi there is a sharp corner and the police are cautioning drivers to reduce speed when approaching the area.

Peter Akugizibwe, a resident of Kiranzi wants the Uganda National Roads Authority to erect road signs at such a place to avoid more accidents.

Uganda National Roads Authority officials could not readily comment. The wreckage of the lorry has been towed to Mabale police post while the bodies are at Kagadi hospital mortuary.
