Nyendo town is becoming one of the risky towns for teenage girls and women to live.
Marijuana smokers are making life difficult for teenage girls and women in Nyendo. They have been blamed for the sudden surge in rape cases.Police have registered about 30 cases related to rape and defilement.
A group of girls and women have petitioned police seeking their intervention. The petition reads in part that “under the influence of marijuana, the men forcefully rape women and make their environment more risky.
Led by Jane Namaganda, a bar maid in Nyendo town, the women stormed the police station on Tuesday and demanded that police arrests all the men that have been waylaying female students at night.
“Our lives are in danger and we cannot move at night going to shops to buy consumer goods because of the notorious marijuana smokers”, said the petitioners.
Police said Nyendo suburb is harbouring notorious people who engage in dubious activities like pick pocketing, robbery, house breaking, prostitution, witchcraft, and they use narcotic drugs which have also resulted into abuse of women and girls.
Faridah Nabakooza, a housewife in Mukudde zone told police that her 12-year-old daughter was raped by a man suspected to be trafficking marijuana. She however says the man disappeared on learning that police was looking for him.
Girls have been plunged into a state of fear and some have abandoned school for fear of being raped.
Meanwhile, the police led by the officer in charge of Nyendo police station, Patrick Maikula have conducted a crack down against marijuana trafficking and smoking. Ten men have so far been arrested.
The police impounded seeds of marijuana packed in polythene bags and the suspects are being held at Nyendo police station.
The officer in charge of Nyendo police post, Patrick Mayikula, said that marijuana smoking has greatly contributed to insecurity, because many wrong doers who smoke marijuana live in Nyendo.
