News
Gun fire and loud explosions have rocked Luweero town council this morning as police tried to disperse protesters.

A group of protestors stormed the streets this morning protesting against the accumulated garbage heaps in Luwero town.

Some carrying garbage, the protestors made a procession from Kasana market to Luweero town council office and dumped the garbage in the office of the town clerk Muluuta Mugagga.

They also demanded for his immediate resignation, accusing him of incompetence. The angry residents also mounted barricades, blocking traffic along the Luweero - Kampala highway for more than 20 minutes.

Abdul Nadduli, the LC 5 chairman was forced to reverse his car back to Wobulenzi town council,  as protestors threatened to dump a heap of garbage in his car.

But the drama was brought to an end when police under the command of the District Police Commander, Samuel Bamuzibire intercepted the protesters and fired teargas and rubber bullets, to disperse them.

The DPC accused the protesters of holding a demonstration without informing police and vowed to arrest those behind it for inciting violence.

Yusuf Ssemitala, a resident says that the town council has not collected garbage for one month. He says the stench emerging from the garbage has become unbearable.

He accused police of infringing on their right to express dissent about the town clerk Muluuta Mugagga who is incompetent and corrupt.

The chairman LC 3 of Luweero town council Charles Ssebyala  accused the town clerk of refusing to release over 600,000 shillings to fuel the garbage truck .
