At least 28 students in senior four and six at Nakaseke International College have been arrested following a violent strike at the school. The students went on rampage on Wednesday evening to protest a decision by school authorities to confiscate their clothes and Mobile phones.
They set a blaze the warden’s house, smashed window panes of their dormitories and staff room before police swung led by Edward Kyaligonza, Nakaseke District Police Commander dispersed them using tear gas. Students, who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity, claimed that teachers allowed them to enter the school with mobile phones and their clothes but they were shocked when they turned and started confiscating them.

Wycliff Nyanzi, head teacher Nakaseke International College was still terrified and refused to comment on the strike when URN visited the school this morning. Steven Batanudde, Nakaseke District Education Officer says that they are still awaiting a police report before a decision is reached on whether or not to close the school.

Edward Kyaligonza, Nakaseke DPC says that they are holding 28 students suspected to be the ringleaders of the strike. He says that suspects will be transferred to Kiwoko Police station to face charges of malicious damage to property and inciting violence.

Police has maintained tight security at the school following threats by some students to stage another strike unless their colleagues are released.
