A prison warder has been arrested for allegedly shooting two people to death.
The incident occurred at around 8pm on Wednesday at Gayaza village in Kasaali Sub-county in Rakai district.
Dodoviko Mutendo, a prison warder attached to Lwamagwa Government Prison reportedly shot Justine Naggawa, an expectant mother and Pauline Nakanwagi from their home in Gayaza village.
According to an eyewitness, John Bosco Ssenoga, Mutendo was accompanied by unknown people at the time of the incident. Ssenoga says that they immediately fled after the shooting leaving the deceased persons in a pool of blood.
He says that Naggawa died on the spot after the bullets tore through the left side of her chest while Nakanwagi followed shortly after too much bleeding.
The villagers claim that Mutendo had serious wrangles with the deceased persons over a one-and- a half hectare piece of land which he claims to be his.
They further add that Mutendo has always tried to forcefully evict the deceased persons from the land in question but his efforts were turned down for lack of proof of ownership.
Noah Serunjogi, the area police spokesperson told URN reporter that preliminary investigations clearly link Mutendo to the murder because he was seen walking with some unknown people in the village a few minutes before the incident.
Serunjgi explains that Mutendo was seen at Gayaza village at the time of the incident yet he was supposed to be at Lwamagwa Government prison at the same time.
He adds that the bodies of the deceased were given to their family for burial.
Meanwhile Mutendo is under custody at Kalisizo Police station waiting to be produced in court after investigations.
