FUFA has finally secured an appointment to meet the Secretary General of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), following URA FC’s disqualification from the lucrative Orange Africa Champions League.
Mujib Kasule, the FUFA Vice President in-charge of the League disclosed to URN this on Friday that they had eventually secured April 17th, for a meeting with Hicham El Amrani at the CAF headquarters in Cairo to try and explain URA’s case.
Early this week CAF announced the disqualification of URA from the 2012 Orange Africa Champions League after the team failed to travel to Bamako, Mali for the return leg tie against Djoliba FC.
The Ugandan champions had lost the first leg 2-0 but communicated to CAF last week that they could not travel to Bamako because of the insecurity there following a military coup. The government of Uganda advised the URA team not to risk flying to Mali because the country was not safe enough.
Mujib said he will travel to Cairo on Sunday together with the URA club secretary Henry Mayeku. He said he hopes the disqualification can be changed because URA has a genuine reason and did not skip the trip simply because they had lost the morale having lost the first leg at Namboole Stadium.
It promises to be a tough task for the duo trying to convince the CAF Secretary General since a team from Gambia managed to travel to Mali to face AS Real de Bamako in the Confederations Cup. In case CAF holds the disqualification, URA could be pardoned the three year suspension from taking part in International competitions and instead asked to pay the US$1,500 fine and the profit Djoliba FC would have made if the match had taken place.
