A police crackdown on excess passengers has paralysed traffic flow along the Mbarara- Kasese highway.
Most affected by the latest crackdown were students ereturning home for the school holiday.
Wilfred Byamugisha, the Bushenyi District traffic officer, issued a tough warning on Monday cautioning motorists against overloading passengers.
Byamugisha vowed that excess passengers found perched on the taxi seat edges would be arrested and prosecuted. He said the move is intended to control road accidents along the Mbarara-Kasese highway.
The warning worked as vtaxi drivers adhered to carrying 14 passengers per omnibus. But this action left several people stranded along the way.
Musa Ali a taxi driver along the Mbarara -Bushenyi road refused to load student’s mattresses, suitcases and other heavy bags for fear of apprehension.
Ali says he would rather pack his car instead of overloading and falling into trouble with the traffic law.
Many parents and their children were Friday morning seen stranded at the road side after taxi drivers refused to load heavy luggage.
