The leader of opposition in Parliament, Nandala Mafabi has faulted Internal Affairs Minister Hilary Onek for continuing to claim that he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree from Makerere University.
Mafabi says despite admitting that he did not complete his first degree in Makerere University, Minister Onek has continued to use this false information.
Both in his Curriculum Vitae and personal information submitted to Parliament, Onek indicates that he studied at Makerere University from 1971 to 1974.
Early this month, Makerere University reportedly cleared Onek’s academic credentials, confirming that although the minister did not complete the course, his admission and subsequent qualifications were authentic. Onek taught at the same institution between 1980 and 1982 at the then Faculty of Technology. In earlier interviews with local media, Onek is quoted as having questioned how he would teach at Makerere without authorities verifying his academic papers.
The minister blamed parliament for making a mistake from the Seventh Parliament when a clerk in-charge of data mistook his admission at Makerere as having obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the institution.
But Mafabi notes that the bio-data of every MP is filled in by the legislators themselves. Onek has continued to present the same mistake since the 7th parliament to date. Documents in Parliament show that the latest mistake was after the 2011 general elections when the Minister stated that he went to Makerere from 1971 to 1974. These documents were signed by the minister himself on May 31st 2011.
The leader of opposition now says the matter will be submitted to police for further investigation, in which case the police would be investigating their boss, the internal affairs minister. The same police have also failed to complete investigations into allegations that the same minister received bribes from oil companies to facilitate the smooth operation in the oil sector.
