Makerere University has examined up to 1600 prospective students wishing to study law in the 2012/2013 academic year.

Starting next academic year, it is a pre-requisite for students applying for the bachelor of law course at Makerere University to first sit a pre-entry examination prior to admission.

Harriet Musisnguzi, the public relations officer Makerere University School of Law says a total of 1600 students sat for the pre entry examinations on Saturday.

Qualifications for the pre entry examinations include O-level and A-level certificates for high school leavers, a second class diploma for diploma holders and a degree from a recognized university for degree holders.

Other requirements include payment of 86,000 shillings to the university account for registration and revision aptitude past papers.

Shortly after the Saturday examination, some of the students including Irene Wabwire, Mary Kantone, Masikwa Billy and Moses Kato, shared their experiences with Uganda Radio Network on the nature of the questions asked.

Earlier this month, Alfred Masikye Namoah, the Academic Registrar Makerere University said that the results for the pre entry examinations shall be the sole criteria for admission to bachelor of laws degree course, adding that it shall also be the basis for selecting students for government sponsorship.

According to Masikye, the decision to institute this examination was based on study findings on the causes of high failure rates in the school of law.

In 2010/2011 academic year, Makerere admitted 350 law students but Harriet Musinguzi says that this year’s intake is still under consideration at the university top level.
