Charles Taylor verdict sends message of deterrence

Taylor has been convicted of war crimes, including murder, rape, and recruitment of child soldiers during the 1991 to 2002 civil war in Sierra Leone which claimed the lives of thousands of people.

The judgment in the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor who was Thursday found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes sends a "strong message" to other leaders, Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has said.

Taylor has been convicted of war crimes, including murder, rape, and recruitment of child soldiers during the 1991 to 2002 civil war in Sierra Leone which claimed the lives of thousands of people.


Navi Pillay said the judgment delivered by the UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone, shows how far international criminal law has developed to hold even the most powerful accountable.
