An intern doctor’s sit down strike at Jinja hospital has ended.
A total of 16 doctors interning at the hospital staged a sit down strike last week, demanding payment of their two month’s salary arrears.
Each intern doctor earns Shs 600,000 shillings per month.
Some intern doctor’s who preferred anonymity, complained facing threats of termination from the hospital Principal administrator Charles Tumusiime. However Charles Tumusiime, denies the allegations, and instead urged the intern doctors to be ethical in their work and training.
Dr. Michael Osinde, the Jinja Hospital Director says the salary arrears have been paid and the threats of termination of their services should not be taken serious.
The strike has taken a toll on patients in the maternal, casualty and children’s wards, which need a number of doctors to work on the patients. Most patients were referred from to Jinja hospital.
This morning the doctor’s have been seen examining patients, and some could be seen escorting patients to the surgery theatre.
Elizabeth Kakaire, Senior nursing officer in charge of the casualty ward 9, says patients who require surgery can now be worked on, now that the strike is over.
