The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has written to the executive members of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) to sort out the mess in their body by May 23this year when the IOC Executive Board meets.
In a letter dated April 27, 2012 and signed by the IOC National Olympic Committees (NOC) relations Director, Pere Miro and President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Lassana Palenfo, UOC was directed to urgently convene an Extraordinary General Assembly meeting.
These developments come at a time after UOC is in a mess after its president, Roger Hans Ddungu, was last week suspended by his executive committee for what they called abuse of office and contravening the constitution.
In the letter IOC describes the situation at UOC as extremely regrettable adding that it is an internal matter that must be resolved shortly by and within NOC.
When contacted, Denis Galabuzi, the UOC Vice President (Technical) said the IOC letter and directive was very welcome because even the National Associations had already called for this Extraordinary General Assembly and it was only a matter of the date to be fixed.
The International body further advised that the Extraordinary General Assembly will have to review, decide upon and resolve all pending issues which UOC is now facing, in accordance with the UOC constitution currently in force and the Olympic Charter.
IOC also stressed that Olympic Games are not government Games and there is no reason why the state in Uganda should interfere as was the case in a letter dated April 23, 2012 questioning Ddungu who elected himself to be the Chef de Mission for the London Games.
Ddungu has not commented on this story as URN Reporter tried to reach him in vain. He is not in office since he was suspended and all his known mobile phones were unavailable on Monday.
