Suspected thugs on Thursday night waylaid and killed a police officer a few meters from the main gate of Bushenyi State Lodge.

Vitali Owoyesiga was on Friday morning found dead in front of the State Lodge with a rope tied around his neck. He was on his way to guard the Bushenyi district chairman’s residence which shares a fence with the state lodge. The thugs, who reportedly took off with Owoyesiga’s gun, used a rope to strangle him and his body did not have any cuts.

Bushenyi district police Commander Joab Wabwire has been arrested following the incident.

Before he was arrested Wabwire told our reporter that Owoyesiga was on his way to report to his duty when thugs waylaid him.

Wabwire said Owoyesiga was riding his bicycle to work when the thugs attacked him, running away with his gun with 30 rounds of ammunition but leaving the bicycle behind.

Later the mid south western regional police commander, Hilary Kulayigye ordered the arrest of Wabwire saying that there were some irregularities in the deployment of Owoyesiga. Kulayigye said that Wabwire did not follow deployment procedures for police officers.

According to Kulayigye, Wabwire deployed one police officer instead of two, adding that Wabwire has to explain and take responsibility as a deploying officer.

Police in the district has started the hunt for the gun, which they say may be used to terrorise residents.
