Kabale police is holding a Rwandese woman accused of dumping her one and half month old baby in a pit latrine. I9-year-old Geremasi Murenzi was picked up on Sunday after she dumped her baby in a pit latrine belonging to Obeid Tumwikirize in Kasheregyenyi village in Kamuganguzi Sub County.

Preliminary police investigations show that Murenzi left home with the infant to seek assistance from his father but sneaked into the pit latrine of Tumwikirize and dumped the baby. Tumwikirize says that his children heard the baby crying in the pit latrine and reported to him. He mobilized residents who dug up the latrine and rescued the infant who was in critical condition.

Murenzi told URN shortly after she was picked up that she decided to dump the child in the pit latrine because the baby was very sick and its father had refused to provide for the baby. She says that after dumping the baby she was planning look for employment in Kabale Municipality and move on with her life.
