Residents of Kichope and Barogole parishes in Ojwina Division, in Lira town staged a protest on Monday against the poor state of the roads.
More than 100 people blocked the 7KM independent road using logs and blocks. The road under contention is currently being constructed by Shajapa technical limited. They demanded to know why it is taking too long to complete the road.
Acuma William, a local resident accused the contractor of shoddy works. He claims the drainage system is poor.
Independent road is mainly used by traders and has since been closed.
Ongwech Moses, a local resident accused the municipal engineer of failing to monitor the road and blamed the shoddy works on kickbacks.
It took the intervention of the police personnel and the district LCV chief Alex Oremo to re-open the road. Oremo ordered that the work on the road resume in three days, lest he risk arrest.

But Lira municipality Engineer David Bagenda, says they want to review the contract. He however refuted cliams that the costs of construction had been inflated. He admitted paying UGX90M of the total contract sum amounting to UGX160M to the contractor.

George Mawa, chairperson works committee accused the technocrats of conniving with the contractors to defraud the municipal.

The Independent is a 7KM feeder road that connects Ojwina Division headquarters to Alito camp along the Kampala highway from the African Quarter’s side. Attempts to reach contractor proved futile as their phone contacts were off air by press time.
