The poor state of roads in Njeru town council has angered residents. They accuse the town council officials of carrying out shoddy work. The residents argue that most of the roads constructed in the 2010/2011 financial year are impassable yet they are vital for the transportation of produce from Kiyindi landing site in Buikwe district.
Fred Kigozi, a resident of Buwagajjo in Njeru town council the construction of Buwagajjo road is substandard. He says despite the fact that the road was worked on five months ago; it has developed huge galleys and huge pothole affecting the traffic flow. He says that poor state of the road has affected residents of Buzika, Nyenga and Kiyindi who use it to transport their produce to the market.
He says several other access roads leading to Kyabagu, Kasanja and Namwezi zones are in appalling state yet town council authorities claim that the money budgeted for the road works has already been spent. Catherine Nalongo, a resident of Naminya accuses the town officials of failing to present accountability for the road works.
But Richard Kimera, a member of the Njeru Town council executive says that the budget was finalized but it was rejected by auditors because of some queries. Robert Tolbert Taitika, Njeru town council Engineer says the residents are mistaken about the road works. He explains that according to their plan, some of the roads were meant to get a slight uplift, while others were put under the routine maintenance depending on the available resource envelope.
Taitika says that last year, the road sector was allocated very meager resources.
