Unidentified gunmen have shot dead Amon Thembo Wamupaghasya, the director Mupaghasya Community Television Center in Kasese. Wamupaghasya was shot on Friday night at his home in Kyogah village in Bwera Sub County. He was rushed to Bwera hospital for treatment but doctors there pronounced him dead on arrival.

Yohazi Kamanyi, a relative to the deceased says that Wamupaghasya was returning from Kibarura village in Kisinga sub county where he was hired to cover a giveaway party and decided to spend the night and his rural home in Kyogha. He says that a gang of armed men raided the home and shot the deceased before making off with gadgets.

Kamanyi says that the deceased’s son who was with him escaped an unhurt. James Mwesigye, Kasese Resident District Commissioner has condemned the murder but attributed it to the laxity by the police. He accused police of neglecting patrols in the district. Police has not yet reacted to the murder as no report had been filed by the deceased’s family by the time of filing their report.

The late Amon Thembo Wamupaghasya rose to fame in the early 1990s when he used to present a popular Lhukonzo program on the government owned Radio Uganda before it was rebranded to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation. John Thawithe, Kasese District Information Officer and Veteran journalist John Nzinjah who worked with the deceased, describe his death as a big blow to the media fraternity in their region.
