Uganda’s two top squash players Micheal Kawooya and Ian Rukunya have been invited to the Caribbean Islands for an International Open in June.
The two players who also represented Uganda at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, are expected to leave for the St Lucia Open, in Barbados on June 20 for the week-long event which is expected to attract top world players. Kawooya, however, says getting the money to travel to Barbados will not be simple, even though they are determined to make it to the event where they hope to gain international exposure.
According to the invitation sent by the St Lucia Squash Association president, Cheryl Renwick, , the organizers will meet the accommodation fees for the Ugandan players.
Martin Fowler, chairman Uganda Squash Rackets Association (USRA) said accommodation and travel costs for the players are still a challenge.
The players need about 15 million shillings to make the trip.
National coach Simon Kajubu said such a tournament will help expose the players better.
