The 7th edition of the Kyabazinga Track and Field Athletics Championships will take centre stage on June 9 in Jinja. Athletes will be all out to hit the qualification campaign trail for the London 2012 London Olympic Games, World Junior Championships and Africa Senior Championships due this year.
The World Junior Championships for athletes aged 18-19 years will take place in Barcelona, Spain in June, while the Africa Senior Championships for 20 years and above is slated for Porto Novo, Benin in July ahead of the Olympic Games which start the same month.
Secondary schools in Busoga will be expected to take advantage of participating in the Kyabazinga Championships to prepare and test their teams ahead of their respective district competitions and National Secondary Schools Championship due in July.
The Busoga championship will be the third regional track and field event after Eastern and Northern regions. The Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation's (UAAF) calendar boasts of a series of six regional track and field competitions.
The Busoga Athletics Association, the organizers of the annual Kyabazinga Championships, expect over 50 teams representing clubs, districts, and schools for the one-day action in Jinja. The competition which is recognized by the UAAF has won acclaim as one of the best organized events and has been granted status to host national and international athletes.
Expected teams include; Kamuli, Iganga, Mayuge, Bugiri, Namutumba, Jinja, Iganga Town View SS, King of Kings, Kakira Sugar Works, Jinja Nursing School, Jinja SS, Bugembe Youth, Kakira Estates and Jinja Youth. Kaliro, Namayingo, Luuka and Buyende districts have meanwhile shown interest in making their debut in this year’s championship..
The Kyabazinga Championship is meant to assist tap talent and offer competition to districts, schools, Universities and clubs located in the Busoga region.
