Barely a week after the arrest of Paddy Serunjogi alias Sobbi, a suspected mastermind of city robberies, traders in Kikuubo are demanding the removals of the Police outpost Mini price building. Sobbi was picked up friom Nebbi park on Firiday last week just as he was about to rob DFCU bank.
Now, traders accuse cops deployed at the Mini Price Police outpost of conniving with thugs. Several traders who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity say they often arrest thugs and hand them to over at the outpost only to release them immediately they leave. They claim that even when the thugs are chased by the traders they run and hide into the Mini price police post.
They claim that the cops know some of the thugs that keep terrorizing people around the area and share the loot with the criminals. They claim the thugs who usually operate as individuals and in groups of four or six, mainly target customers emerging from banks in Kikuubo and follow them. The traders say that the thugs sometimes snatch the money or stealthily take it from their victims.
These groups mainly target traders from South Sudan, DR. Congo and Rwanda and Burundi. David Mwangi a trader along Nabugabo road near the New Taxi Park said that the thugs have now started targeting traders offloading containers. Mwangi said many traders have lost their merchandise to the thieves and formed a committee under Dickson Kanakulya, to defend their interests.
James Ruhweza, the Kampala Central Police Station Division Police Commander said that he was unaware that some cops connive with thugs. Ruhweza promised to investigate and cause the transfer of the implicated cops.
