Uganda Invited for U-18 Zone V Cup of Nations Basketball event in Kigali

Uganda has been invited for the regional U-18 Zone V Cup of Nations Basketball Championship slated for July 17-22 in Kigali, Rwanda. The event which will feature both the men and women’s teams will attract Tanzania, Somalia, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt and Burundi. The competition is meant to act as a qualifier for the Africa Nations Championships for U-18 (AfroBasket U18 & AfroBasket U18 Women).


Richard Mutabazi, Organizing Secretary of the hosting country Federation Rwandese of Basketball (FERWABA) told URN that the team placed first following the Men’s competition will qualify to the AfroBasket for U18 in Mozambique in August 2012. Ambrose Tashobya, Chairman Federation of Uganda Basketball Association-FUBA says that they are still planning to see if they can send a team for the event.


He says that they hope to look around for money and also prepare a team. According to the organizers, only the African National Federations affiliated to FIBA and FIBA Africa have the right to participate in this competition, provided they have fulfilled all their financial obligations. The Federations have been asked to meet the May 30 deadline of entry.
 
All participating teams without accompanying referee appointed by FIBA Africa or without a doctor shall be imposed a fine of US$3000 to be paid to FIBA Africa before its effective participation. The registration fee part team is US$400.
