Close to 15,000 people from the Democratic Republic of Congo have fled into southwest Uganda, as fighting continues between Congolese government forces and rebel groups, the United Nations High Commission for refugees said Tuesday.
Andrej Mahecic, UNHCR spokesperson, says more than 7,000 of those displaced, many of whom come from villages in North Kivu, are camping at Bunagana town along the Uganda- Democratic Republic of Congo border.
At least 9,000 displaced people have also crossed the border into Rwanda.
Mahecic said efforts are being made to transport the displaced persons from the volatile borders to safer areas.
