The warring factions of Uganda People’s Congress-UPC have finally agreed to meet and chat away forward for their party. The factions led by Olara Otunu, the UPC president and former national chairman Maj. Edward Rurangaranga are expected to hold talks before the end of this week. The talks are being mediated by senior party elder Zaverio Byabagambi from Kyenjojo.
Byabagambi is a respected party opinion leader by both factions. He met both parties on Tuesday in two separate meetings in which it was agreed that they should hold a national council meeting which will lead to the delegates’ conference. Joseph Bossa , the UPC Vice president on Wednesday announced that they were holding talks with the Rurangaranga group. Bossa says the meeting between the two groups is meant to agree on when a national council meeting will be held to frame an agenda for the delegates’ conference.

ironically while Bossa emphasized that the meeting was underway, members of Rurangaranga’s faction were holding a parallel outside the party offices. Rurangaranga was together with former national task chairman David Pulkol and former party presidential candidate Sospater Akwenyu among others.
The former national chairman said they agreed to hold the negotiations on condition that Otunnu commits himself in writing saying he is ready to call a national council meeting.
They have now given Otunnu until Thursday to write the letter insisting that if they do not receive it; their planned delegates’ conference set for Sunday- 27th May 2012 shall go on as planned.
Both parties however, agree to commemorate the 27th of May the day Apollo Milton Obote returned to Uganda from exile in 1980 and landed in the country through Bushenyi. The day had always been marked annually by UPC.
