Makerere University Council has started developing guidelines to be used in the search process for a substantive vice chancellor to replace Professor Venansius Baryamureeba who has been serving as the university acting vice chancellor for close to three years.
On Tuesday, the university council chaired by Eng. Dr. Charles Peter Wana Etyem authorized the search committee headed by Dr. Bruce Balaba, to develop guidelines that shall be used to aid the process.
In a press statement Dr. Etyem said the search committee shall have to work on an independent basis during the search process, but that it should develop guidelines aimed at attracting candidates with ability to enable the university realize its vision of being the leading institution for academic excellence and innovations in Africa.
He adds that the search committee has also got a noble duty of ensuring that the developed guidelines lead to the identification of candidates who are tested and proven, including having the courage and charisma to propel Makerere University to greater heights.
Four other members on the committee include Dr. Stephen Maloba, the head of the appointments board, Dr Okello Ogwang, the dean school of literature, languages and communication, Dr Pamela Mbabazi and Dr Stephen Nyanzi.
When Uganda Radio Network contacted Dr Ogwang, he said that he had not received the latest communication from the university council but admitted the search committee has also come up with some proposals that shall be merged with the views from the council to come up with the final draft proposals on the guidelines.
Four professors including Elly Katunguka Rwakishaya, the University head of Research and Graduate Training, Augustus Nuwagaba, the director Reeve Consult International, Edward Kirumira, the Deputy Principal College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Baryamureeba, have expressed interest in the top university job.
Ritah Namisango, the university public relations officer says once the guidelines have been developed, the university shall advertise for the vacancy.
