Four people have died and 26 others are nursing injuries after being beating by rampaging stray dogs in various parts of Luweero District. Two of the deceased have been identified as 6-year-old Frank Seruwagi and 12-year-old Karim Lubwama both residents of Kiiya village in Butuntumula sub county.
John Sekanja, the father to Seruwagi says that his son was beaten by a stray dog that emerged from a bush next to their home while he was playing with other children. He says that they took the victim to a nearby clinic for emergency treatment but his condition worsened and he died.
Dr. Aloysius Lumbuye, Luweero District Veterinary Officer says that 30 people have been beaten by the stray dogs since the beginning of this year. He listed the most affected areas as Makulubita, Katikamu and Butuntumula sub counties. Lumbuye says that they have stepped up a mass vaccination exercise in all sub counties in Luweero to fight the rabid dogs.
He however, advises residents to rush dog bite victims to government health centers where they can receive proper treatment compared to clinics. Lumbuye stresses the need for immediate treatment saying that any delay could lead to death of the victims.
