Three people including a juvenile have died on the spot and ten others been severely injured in a fatal accident involving a bus and Fuso truck in Lyantonde district.

The accident occurred on Friday morning at Kalegero town about 2 kilometers from Lyantonde town council when a Western Coach bus number UAE 898U, which was heading to Kampala, collided head-on with a Fuso truck number UAP 752L heading to Mbarara.

Police identified the dead as 34 year old Robert Nuwagira, the Fuso lorry driver and his turn boy Ashraf Bwambale aged 25, all residents of Lubaga division in Kampala. The third victim is a young boy whose identity could not be easily established.

Jonathan Baloza, the Lwengo District Police Commander who rushed to the scene shortly after the accident, says the unidentified child and Nuwagira died in instantly, while Bwambale died on arrival at Lyantonde Hospital. He also says 10 other passengers have been injured and have been taken to Lyantonde Hospital in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses say that the bus driver was over-speeding. They claim that the driver failed to reduce speed at Kalegero which is located in a sharp corner and he rammed into an oncoming Fuso truck.

Baloza says that Kalegero has become a dangerous spot for all road users saying that more than 6 accidents have occurred at this place within one month.

He explains that awareness campaigns have not yielded good results because most of the drivers have deliberately refused to heed to warnings against over-speeding.

Noah Sserunjogi, the Southern Region Spokesperson says police is still looking for identities of all those involved in the accident. The two wreckages have been have been taken to Lyantonde central police station.

He also says police are hunting for residents including the Kalegero village defense secretary identified as Ramathan Kabanda for allegedly robbing accident victims of their property including money, mobile phones and handbags among other items.

This is the second fatal accident recorded today. Two people died on the spot and two others were critically injured after a head-on collision involving two trailers along the Kampala Lira highway. The accident occurred shortly after midnight at Amuca trading centre, about 8km from Lira town.
