Police detectives in Lwengo district have arrested an LC I Defense Secretary for Katovu village for allegedly stealing over 230,000 shillings, a mobile phone and other properties from accident victims.
Ramanzan Kabanda is among the suspects who allegedly robbed people who were involved in the Friday morning accident at Kalegero town about 2 kilometers from Lyantonde. The fatal accident left two people dead and 10 others injured.
The dead were identified as Robert Nuwagira 34, the lorry driver and his turn-man Ashraf Bwamba aged 25. The accident occurred when a Western Coach bus registration number UAE 898U which was heading to Kampala collided head-on with a Fuso truck number UAP 752L which heading to Mbarara.
Jonathan Baloza, the Lwengo DPC confirms Kabanda’s arrest saying they are still looking for other suspects. He says that Kabanda will also help detectives to recover the rest of the missing items.
Baloza explains that after the accident, Kabanda led a group of people who pretended to be rescuers but instead robbed the victims of their belongings.
Based on a tip off from some concerned residents, detectives followed Kabanda up to his home and they recovered the money and a mobile phone of one of the deceased persons during the search.
Kabanda admitted that he took the money and a phone for safe custody until the owners recover. He says that he was planning to take the items to police at the time they arrested him.
Kabanda is being held at Kyazanga police station.
