Kamuli police is holding three highway robbery suspects. They are Edward Mukisa, Fred Kaunhe and Ayub Isabirye, all residents of Bugembe town council in Jinja district. Pamela Ajilong, Kamuli District Criminal Investigation Officer says that the suspects were picked up on Sunday after staging a highway robbery.
The suspects allegedly ambushed a passenger taxi of registration number UAP 533F at Kiyunga in Mbulamuti Sub County along Jinja-Kamuli road on Saturday night and robbed passengers. They were driving, a Toyota sedan saloon car registration number UAG 543R.
Joshua Kisibo, who was traveling in the taxi, says that the suspects put the driver Bakali Waiswa at gun point and made off with shillings 800,000 in cash and merchandise worth shillings 5 million. Waiswa alerted police at Kasambira police post, which laid a trap for the suspects.
Shanon Kiza, a police officer at Kasambira police post says that after receiving a tip off from Waiswa they notified all police posts in the area to be on the lookout for the suspects. Kiza says that the suspects were intercepted at Kasambira trading center on their way to Jinja.
Pamela Ajilong, Kamuli district Criminal investigation officer says that the trio is helping police investigations into the spiral of robbery activities in Kamuli. The suspects however denied their involvement in robbery activities since there was no exhibit found in their car.
