Lira Municipal Education department has closed Central Secondary School, a privately owned school in the municipality following complaints by students of maladministration and poor hygiene.
Frances Offungi, Lira Municipal Principal Education Officer who ordered the closure today, explains that they got a tip off from students about the appalling conditions they were undergoing.
She says the school has been operating without toilets, water and dormitories. Offungi also says that since Central Secondary School opened for the second term, no teacher has showed up at the school leaving students especially those in upper classes to supervise themselves.
Offungi says that they have sent all students home until the school directors show up. She noted that the school lacks vital educational facilities.
Innocent Okello, the acting Lira Municipality Health Inspector says that the absence of sanitary facilities at the school exposes students to a high threat of disease outbreaks.
Mike Molo, a senior four student says that they have been wondering why their teachers have not been coming. Molo says that he had already paid his tuition for the second term and is now wondering what will happen since the school has been closed.
Emmy Akii, another student demands that the school authorities refund their money to allow him transfer to another school. By mid day on Monday, a team of law enforcement officers had been deployed around the school.
Attempt by URN to speak to the directors of the school were futile as their known mobile phone numbers were switched off. Central Secondary school started operating in the early 1990’s and has been having about 50 students.
