Police in Arua are holding a local council chairman for his alleged participation in the killing of a National Forest Authority [NFA] worker last month.
Josephine Angucia, the north western police spokesperson, said police on Monday arrested Joshua Ajidra, the LCI Vice chairperson of Oguruku village, Ogoko Sub-County in Arua district after investigations linked him to the killing of John Lematia.
She says they have arrested Ajidra following numerous tip-offs from local residents.
Lematia was shot dead at Ajia forest reserve in Vurra Sub-county on May 21.
Angucia explained that Lematia was hired by NFA officials to go and load impounded timber from the forest reserve which neighbours Ogoko Sub-county.
She added that in their investigations, they found out that a man only identified as Ezra, a resident of Muni village, Oluko Sub-County, who was the owner of the impounded timber and is now on run, had been staying at Ajidra’s home. Police sources also say that the two had a meeting before the alleged murder took place.
According to Angucia, seven suspects had earlier on been named for having participated in the murder of Lematia but she said Ajidra will help police in identifying more suspects.
But Ajidra, in his statements at police, denies having any knowledge of the said Ezra. He says when the incident happened he was not even around, which information could not be independently verified from his village.
