Kyambogo Warriors showed they are still a top contender for this year’s Airtel National Basketball League title when they brushed aside Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cannons in a men’s game played at the YMCA Courts on Friday night.
Smarting from a loss to archrivals and defending champions DMark Power last week, the Warriors side took no chance as they beat UCU Canons 78-64. Towering sam Gombya picked 19 points for Warriors together with Syrus Kiviri 25, Henry Malinga 9 and Norman Blick 8 points.
The University side who seem to have lost steam and are still rated highly to make the play-offs, had Desmond Owili pick 17 points, Sunday Okot 15 and Tanzanian import Sudi Ulunga 10 points. The win keeps coach Monday Juruni’s team top of the table before DMark Power play.
In the women’s game, A-1 Challenge who finished in a miserable 6th position last season and are chasing a play-off place this time round brushed aside Makerere Sparks 39-33. Team captain Vickie Ntale picked 11 points for A-1 together with Carol Kisukye 9 and Mariam Birungi 6. The Makerere University team replied with points through Chalin Karungi and Winnie Anyango who both scored 10 points apiece in the tight contest.
Action in the League continues today with several games on card. Airtel Uganda became the new sponsors of the basketball league two weeks ago after Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUFA) ended their association with MTN Uganda who had supported the league for six years.
